Malindi Airport achieved a major milestone on Monday by embarking on its first ever international cargo export operations as it successfully dispatched a batch of live sea fish through its aircraft to China through Nairobi. The consignment of live sea fish was sent by Global Focus Logistics Limited Company and their partnership with Kenya Airways has given a boost to export operations of Malindi Airport. The Company has also begun to transport live lobsters and crabs to China. This is seen as a major achievement for the airport because as compared to the export of non-alive sea food, export of live fish needs much care and attention in terms of their packaging, maintenance and more as these animals have to be kept alive all throughout. Even a slight fault can lead to damage and cancel of order and mar the reputation of the air cargo service of the airport.
Since the first consignment was delivered efficiently, more such exports are expected from the airport to different parts of the world. The procedure involves much detailing as the products are alive and have to be kept so. In order to save time, the consignment is first flown via the passenger flights of KQ to the cargo carriers at the airport from where they are flown to their destination. The flight carrying live sea products from Malindi passes via Nairobi and reaches China in 24 hours. To keep the products alive all through this time takes much of a precaution especially in terms of packaging which is no mere feat.
This is seen as a major accomplishment for the airport and it is being lauded across the aviation circles. The Manager at Malindi Airport, Mr. Walter Agong sounded ectastic and proud for the accomplishment when he spoke at the launch. At the official launch, around 750 kg of live crabs and lobsters were shipped by the airport cargo. He said that the new initiative of international cargo services to other countries is truly a turning point in the history of the Malindi International Airport, which he hoped would soon turn into a major milestone for the airport and bring in more such opportunities for the airport to prove its capability. Exporting live products and that too, in the food category mean taking care of hygiene and safety. Even the handling of the packages has to be done with utmost care, which means that the airport has to be deal cautiously at every step.
He added that the export operations of the Malindi Airport would get a huge boost and motivation from the successful shipment of perishable commodities and that the airport will be looked upon as providing efficient air cargo service which could attract major international business. The resort town as the town is addressed to, could also benefit from the success of the airport, he added. Global Focus has so far a major investment in the sea food industry and has many aquariums in Malindi which are used to keep live sea fish. These aquariums see a fault-proof mechanism in maintaining sea animals as these are then packed carefully at these places before being sent via air carriers to other countries for export.
